A Real Talent Howard Stern
A Real Talent: Howard Stern

Jeff Jarvis, CUNY adjunct professor of something, telephoned in to the Howard Stern radio program to kiss Howard’s ass. Between kisses, Google’s #1 fan tried to get in a plug for his other love; Leo Laporte.

Howard would have none of it and laid down the truth.

Howard openly called in to question the revenue numbers publicly given out by TWiT and Leo’s wife turned CEO. He went on to mock the chosen name of the network.
Howard; we loved you before and we love you more now, you have always been an inspiration to those of us tirelessly working at TotalDrama HQ. Babbooey dear friend.
Hey Jeff, thanks for helping out, we owe you one!

  1. Twits name was the reason i never bought a shirt back in the day,I mean walking around with a shirt that to uninitiated sounds like you’re insulting yourself

  2. Based on Howard Stern’s career up to the 80s alone, Leo and TWIT aren’t anywhere near worthy of a lame shout out on Stern’s airwaves. Whilst Leo feeds his ego and fat pig face, Stern actually KNOWS WHAT THE FUCK HE’S TALKING ABOUT in the radio business, and his analysis of TWIT can be no less than right on target.

  3. Howard Stern has been on a bit of a bender lately railing against podcasting in general. He seems to think there is no money to be made in it, and for most there probably isn’t…on top of that there definitely isn’t Howard Stern type money to be made in podcasting, but to be honest there isn’t Howard Stern type money to be made in too many places.

Twit is a terrible name, and its the name of a show which is doubly confusing. I bet it makes it harder to sell to advertisers.

I don’t doubt the 8 million dollar figure being thrown out by Jeff, but I do doubt the numbers for downloads that are thrown out by Leo and others. It seems very off compared to the number of views they get on youtube and that are on the livestream. Hell, just search TWIT or Leo on twitter, you would think there would be alot more activity if there were 250,000 weekly unique downloads (or whatever number they’re throwing out).

Good post, Ghost Dog, keep up the good work!

    1. Having the network name the same as Leo’s top show is perfect as far as advert revenue goes. I see certain advertisers use the promo code twit even on other shows and I highly doubt any of those get counted in once it comes time for Lisa to divvy up the money.

TWiG the other day was just so dreadful. Leo spent 3/4 of it interrupting the others talking and derailing talking points to discuss his vacation and blowing his trumpet about things he’s bought recently.

Nobody gives a fuck Leo. Your vacation stories were old after an hour and we’ve heard them all before already (at least a dozen times each).

      1. He made Windows Weekly equally unbearable. That two hour show could have been a cool 50 minute. Paul on Tom’s show was spectaculer and Paul with Andrew is a concise, always one hour show, because I don’t have to hear Leo double talk everything. He just turns around and says the opposite on the very next show TWiG… WW is leaving my list. After the Windows 10 debut show with all of the fluff from Leo, I’ll just catch Paul on GFQ. He delivers the information much better and without all of Leo’s bullshit stories.

        1. Leo really did, it was like watching someone teach their grandparent how to upgrade windows.

Also, Leo didn’t really listen and kept clicking ahead and doing other things instead of listening to paul, and that drives me so crazy!

            » Quote comment

          1. Me too. It really is a shame, because without him the show would be so great. Imagine Tom, Paul, & Mary Jo on WW. I remember when that happened when Leo was on vacation. It was perfect.

        2. theres a reason i stopped listening to windows weekly when i learned about what the tech, i like that they talk about whatever, they may talk about windows here and there when its needed…….

  4. This made my day lol. why was jarvis on stern anyways ? Was this jarvis posing as a regular caller and not some google ass kissing tech pundit?. Its also funny that he calls stern for being a old fart. really. either way this is classic. Stern may or may not be right about podcasting but there’s very few podcasters that make a great living from what i gather. stern is right unless you had a audience from somewhere else you wont make a ton on podcasting. Most podasters atm are known names from other media . celebrities ect. guys like tom , leo , ect had previous followings elsewhere. tom maybe not as much as leo but he got into podcasts during the first major rush of podcasting. alot of the podcasters im sure have a day job to keep doing it in the first place. leo is a prime example he has the radio show, before they did ads thats all that paid for twit. its funny jarvis says stern destroyed broadcasting. no he changed it moron. thats like saying tv destroyed radio. it did in some ways im sure but it mostly changed it’. radio sucks but it is still relevant. ever drive a car without a smartphone and/or modern radio? it sucks but radio is there to use not even satellite has that. anyways its nice to see jarvis and twits bs be put in its place

          1. Out of my league? Don’t think so. You can make 7 million and still complain. Most business owners do that. They want to pay you very little sleep they will act like they don’t have money. There is no “out of your league” here. It’s a site of a bunch of losers who have no life. Including me.

              » Quote comment

  5. Lets pretend that Leo was still like “old Leo”, and that we all still love him. I do this because I think there is a point to be made regardless of any personal opinion of Leo.

Even if Leo was still the old Leo, Stern’s point still stands. He pointed to Adam Carolla as an example of someone who had a previous career in broadcasting, and being able to bring that over to podcasting. The same is true of Leo. He had the tech tv audience, and his Tech Guy audience. Both traditional broadcasting mediums, and he was able to use that to make TWIT what is was. He is another version of Adam Carolla. Someone with an established audience who brought it over to podcast.

Jeff Jarvis does have a point in relation to Youtube. There is no doubt a whole community culture there. There are people who become huge stars within that culture, that do seem to come from no-where without a traditional background in broadcasting. Jarvis is also right to suggest that Stern could shift his audience from radio to online and bring them with him (not to mention gain a global audience – I’m in Australia, I know Stern through reputation and online clips, and would listen to his show if I could).

So both have a point. Stern is right that the vast majority of podcasting successes come from people who have previous broadcasting experience, but he is wrong to discount the entire culture all together.

I feel that I have repeated myself a bit there, but you get the point, I hope.

  6. The geographical boundaries alone is a reason to ditch old distribution methods. I think eventually a star will be born of podcasting, just as stars will be born from YouTube. Making money from YouTube views is 100% impossible. Making money from podcasting will be possible as soon as they get some real personalities to join the medium.

  7. Stern was right, real broadcasters that turned to podcasting all had an audience in radio or TV …
Leo is a great example of that, he was a local DJ for years, hit the TV screen in the late 90’s & 2000
Unless you followed him during his TV days or you were a tech head ,99% of folks didn’t know him..
Leo always mentioned he’s trying to take his podcast nationally via TV or Radio, he says it would legitimize podcasting if TV and radio viewers excepted it..
That’s his dream, was always to start his own “TV station” ( on the cheap) so 100’s of millions of radio/TV audiences could find him and worship him.
Think about it, that’s why he was always promoting TWit on Regis & Cathy Lee..
TV ( Tech TV) canned his fat fucking ass years ago and he’s been on a mission since then trying to return to regular TV to gain 10’s of millions of viewers .
Why the hell do you think he hadn’t gave up on TTG sat & sun? because it has a huge captive audience he can still pluck new viewers from it to listen to some crappy TWIT show.
Leo has the same alibi , gets fired or fucked over / called out by someone (TV)or something (Apple)
Decides to start his own “TV”or use a competitor ,then trash talks about his past failures or fuckups by blaming the last folks that helped him out and he used as a stepping stone up the ladder , all the while trying to get big enough so he will be reinstated or accepted back on his own terms to TV and Apple

  8. Not only is TWIT a terrible name that begs for mockery, but it’s not even a word you ever heard outside of a retirement home, if that retirement home was from the 80s. As a side note, to this day Leo resents twitter for (among other things) completely eclipsing the brand with a not-stupid version of the same word. He must die inside a little every time he tweets.

    1. Well it’s an insult in British English, which is why I thought it was a bad name. Not mention the confusion between the netcast network and the show ln Sunday nights.

Business sense he doesn’t really have.

  9. Jeff Jarvis said, “He brings in $8M per year.” If you combine TWiT with the Premiere Network’s income from the Tech Guy Show… Maybe? But I’m with Stern, I would have to see some proof.

Many thanks to koolaide. Good find!

  10. 8 million a year for rehashed content commentary that TWIT is famous for. I find that hard to believe. TWIT was barely making a million a year while at the cottage and that was with more content and less expenses. The Brick house rent keeps going up and there is less original content.

      » Quote comment

  11. $8million a year is just over $150,000 a week.

What sort of audience size would you need in order to be able to sell $150,000’s worth of advertising every week?

Is it possible that The Tech Guy has a huge audience and therefore brings in several million dollars a year?

      » Quote comment

      1. It’s certainly not 7 million unique downloads.

I believe the average TWiT sycophant downloads at least 6 to 9 podcasts that the “network” produces each week. That clearly suggests that the viewership is not as extensive as Laporte & #gold-digger tries to imply.

The advertisers are therefore not reaching new prospective consumers but are getting their message out to a dwindling and saturated audience. Existing advertisers would do well to try to promote their goods on other podcasts which would have more engaging viewership.

          » Quote comment

          1. In #CEHo eyes; YES. They like to inflate their numbers and self-importance.

So the actual viewership is a lot lower than 7m TWiT are claiming.

              » Quote comment

  12. LOL! After listening to the complete clip…ummm…Stern is from the old media days and he has no idea. He doesn’t know some of the most popular people in the “podcasting” world.

      » Quote comment

        1. That’s not an apt comparison. Pewdiepie caters to kids and preteens, which don’t listen to podcasts I’m guessing.

Just because both YT and podcasting are new media doesn’t mean thd audience compares. By your account what is TWiT with at the most a few thousand videos and a dozen comments per video?

            » Quote comment

  13. I would just like to thank this site for showing me things I didn’t know. Not sure I’m glad I do know them , kinda spoils the “he’s a kewl guy thing” after all.
I do see why Leo hates this site as it points out things most people (has to be more than just me) don’t catch.
No one likes their flaws/dirty laundry hung out to dry in public after all.
Still good of you to open our eyes.

  14. I listened to that live, and the best part was when howard said “who’s leo”
Mr Radio Leo Laporte who claims to be a radio god, and Leo’s “friend” Jarvis doesn’t even defend his friend, just keeps talking about money. I knew Jarvis was a tool, but this proved it.

      » Quote comment

  15. Howard said he doesn’t believe that *anyone* in podcasting or internet broadcasting is making money and *all* internet broadcasters claiming large profits are lying. Not specifically Leo. He said he tells people who ask him how to get into broadcasting to go to “real” radio or TV companies, not the internet.

He said the only people who are making it on the internet are those who already had a name and a following from old media. Howard seemed unaware of Leo or TWiT since Leo WAS a broadcaster who came to the internet with a following from main stream media. As getmesoup wrote above, “I listened to that live, and the best part was when howard said “who’s leo.”

So the only negative takeaway is that Howard never heard of TWiT or Leo not that he was specifically calling out Leo as a liar.

I think Leo and his CEO and Padre etc. are as awful as all of you, but also, unlike all of you, believe that hating creepy people does not give you license to make up your own stories about them or slant those stories in a dishonest way.

    1. Since when is opinion a misrepresentation?

Yeah, Helloworld will take Christina Warrens face and run with it…(and it looks like someone did) but who cares?

They’re very aware of libel here and know better than to just make shit up and present it as fact. Notice there’s always some kind of proof.

…and if you include #dickgate in your estimation I’ll fight you to the death on that one. I saw it happen, LIVE and unedited and I obviously wasn’t alone.

Nobody at TWIT gets anything here they don’t deserve.

  16. Howard makes the exact point I’ve been making for years about podcasting. The only ones who are successful at all already had a career somewhere else. Even Leo had the radio show and TechTV before TWIT and then it took years before he made a living at all at it.

As for PewdiePunk, that jackass doesn’t do podcasts he does YouTube videos for little kids that giggle at the word “fart.”
He was the media darling on all the news channels when they were still trying to figure out social media which just gave him more exposure.

Howard can be crude but he keeps it real which is something the old fool (Jarvis) refuses to accept.

  17. Radio is cheap and reliable, for an investment of no more than $10, a user can listen to unlimited amounts of content. No subscriptions and no ads from a company in Zimbabwe you could care less about. I listen to the “radio” daily. People are just “addicted” to the Internet. They feel they are in control of what they listen to or watch. In fact, its the other way around, the Internet controls you and causes attention deficit disorder. You have to be connected in order to feel like you belong. Yes, a small part of the younger generation is turning off the receiver and turning on the modem. On the radio, you can dominate a city, in a pod cast, you may be nothing more than a whisper. As far as pukie-pie, thats is just a clown who is a fade. No one will remember who he is in a few years. How Twit makes any real money, is a mystery. 😉

This is extremely obvious to everyone.

That is, it is extremely obvious to everyone except for those whose ability to think rationally has been negatively impacted by psychiatric disorders that have bred all-consuming hatred for and rage at internet personalities they never even met.

Much like the crazy people seen on city streets who talk to themselves railing against “The President” or “The Mayor” or “Tom Cruise” for all their problems.
