Hurricane Lisa will not stop until TWiT is destroyed

In a move that would make Hurricane Maria envious, TWiT’s much-maligned CEO Lisa Laporte continues her reign of destruction on what remains of the failing TWiT Network.

In the latest Inside TWiT blog post, Lisa Laporte outlined the upcoming fall changes (i.e. cancellations) that were necessary to “bring more context and perspective” to the TWiT network.

The informative yet sponsor-challenged Home Theater Geeks has finally been 86’d from the menu, but thankfully Scott Wilkinson will continue to grace us on The Tech Guy radio show, while also remaining Leo Laporte’s personal audio/video calibrator for the rest of his natural life. The LG TV tagline “Life’s Good” is extremely appropriate here, unless you’re totally trapped right now like Scott Wilkinson.

Secondly, the hilariously insightful daily tech news show Tech News Today is being downsized to a weekly show, leaving its final viewers concerned how they are going to last 6 days without their daily dose of tech news.

But as a goodwill gesture, those who subscribed to Tech News Today will automatically be subscribed to its weekly replacement (yay?) We haven’t seen this level of generosity since U2 gifted their fucking terrible album to all iTunes users and that didn’t end well.

Last, but not least, the highly unpredictable Know How has been exorsized of half its shows. The twice-a-week show — which Father Robert Ballecer simply uses as a pulpit for self-praise and native ads — will now be seen only once per week. We reached out to Fr. Robert for comment and his exact words were “I TOTALLY understand that it’s painful… but this is healthy”. [ #twitlive chat – Oct. 1/17 17:52 PDT ] We firmly believe this isn’t the first time he’s used that line on somebody.

In summary, Abraham Lincoln might have freed the slaves, but Lisa Laporte did one better by liberating Mondays from the TWiT schedule. While canceling shows does marginally impact the bottom line, we don’t think this is enough to stay profitable, which is why we suspect another round of firings is just around the corner. Please tell us who you think will be fired next, and why. If you’re a TWiT employee now’s your chance to throw your co-worker under the bus.

Editor’s Note: Thank you to the anonymous chatter in our chat room for providing the content for this story. If you have breaking news please feel free to submit a tip, or if you’re tired of rotting away in your Mom’s basement please send us your resume.

  1. Megan is now, till the next downsizing, a part timer. Ad revenue is down considerably which explains Lisa’s personal changes to the TWiT lineup. You can bet her vacation account is fully charged!!! Since her appearance on the TWiT scene as Leo’s over paid and over sexed bookkeeper, she has cost Leo millions in divorce, childsupport and vacation expenses. I refer to her as the gal with the golden gash.

    1. Jason and Megan have now got to leave – mortgages don’t pay themselves from part-time work at TWiT. This schedule change is just giving them breathing space to find other full-time employment, I’ll bet they’re gone within months.

Sarah Lane has gone full circle and joined Tom as a regular – funded by Patreon.

      1. Yeah, i feel bad for Jason. He seems like an actual nice guy compared to Leo….. but he is gonna get screwed since he relocated his life to petaluma when he took a job with twitch. Unless he wants a long commute to san francisco every day he is going to have to move since there is no other tech work for him in petaluma. It’s only a matter of time until Leo decides he will host all the remaining shows himself.

      1. Firing Tom was the dumbest thing they’ve ever done. He was the one person, perhaps along with Sarah Lane who could’ve replaced Leo if he ever retired. But Lisa hyped up the insecurities about that and the move to LA after opening the Brick House Studios drove Leo insane. You’re going to Skype into a million dollar studio we just bought? How dare you!

If Leo wasn’t such an ass, my bet is Tom would’ve been back in SF/Petaluma by now. His wife no longer works at YouTube, as a matter of fact she has been all over the place.

This is what happens when you think with your dick and not your head. Leo had such a good thing going. I feel like we’re watching the Titanic sink in slow-motion.

(and with Molly – it was always very telling she didn’t go with Tom to Petaluma) Tom should have been Leo’s gain, over CNET’s loss – but he fucked it up.

    3. How does it work that the Daily News is now a direct competitor with This Week in Tech, the flagship show? It’s redundant. These guys have lost their mojo. Also what happened to Art is ANAL? They cannot sell jack anymore.

  2. Since TWiT is now using (aka “stealing”) “Tech News Weekly” as a show name, I guess it is alright for GFQ Network/terrorist Andrew Zarian to have a “This Week in Tech” named show. He already has Iyaz over there with a show, plus a mostly copycat “Windows Weekly” show so why not use a few other TWiT show names since Leo/Lisa have established that it is more than okay to do this.. just like when L&L were told to stop using the “Screen Savers” name but ignored that “request”
(https://totaldrama.net/2015/04/leo-laporte-openly-defies-cease-desist-from-comcast-nbcuniversal/)!! If not names of current shows, plenty of old TWiT shows that are no longer being produced that the names can be recycled..

    – This Week in Fun (Andrew does a recap of Totaldrama.net )
    – This Week in Computer Hardware (Since this show is just basically a repeat of the PCPer.com podcast, I am sure Ryan won’t mind doing the same show THREE times a week. Ryan practically repeats the same words & phrases to Patrick that he said the night before on his own podcast.)
    – Abby’s Road (She tells stories about her fight for normalcy while dealing with a dysfunctional father and her step-family)
    – Jumping Monkeys (holy crap, I didn’t know this was ever a TWiT show .. Andrew can make this a podcast about the Bronx Zoo)
    – Padre’s Corner (showing that Padre has no math skills , this is from https://twit.tv/shows/padres-corner – “18% science, 27% irreverence, 22% current events, 56% geek life, 13% non-sequiturs and $19 of ranting.” All those percentages equal 136%.. and what is with the $19?? Anyway, a show about NYC priests)
    – FLOSS Weekly (dentistry show of course)
    – Munchcast (perhaps a show either about LGBTIQCAPGNGFNBA issues or The Wizard of Oz)
    – Maxwell’s House (duh.. coffee)
    – TWiT Photo (a netcast/podcast about taking selfies and everything related to that)
    – Game On! (any game related podcast can use this as a name)
    – Marketing Mavericks (like Tonya Hall is busy being an off-site producer or with anything else)
    – Ham Nation (produced by the National Country Ham Association or HAMS: Harm Reduction –
Alcoholism treatment program in New York City)

Seriously, Andrew should get Scott to do “Home Theater Geeks” on GFQ like he did with “This Week In Radio Tech”!! Stick it to L&L!!

    Just my 2 cents and Padre’s $19!!

    2. As far as i can tell GFQ is in worse shape than TWIT and is pretty much finished… most of their shows either have no recent episodes or barely have any new episodes other than What the Tech….and Thurrott seems to miss a couple of episodes a month since he started to do his own podcast on his site. There’s a reason why Zarian now has a full time job somewhere else.

Steve pushed Harry’s, and now it’s Dollar Shave. The food shipping companies have been swapped, too. These are not good portents. Some of us have mentioned to Steve that he might move to his own platform, like Tom. Leo won’t do it, but Lisa might.

It also gives Lisa a reason to cut back Megan to a 3 day a week part timer. It’ll be the same crappy show, but longer and a bigger bore. Next will be the Tuesday shows, either shitcanned or moved… notice how most of the air talent is gone but the production staff remains, Lisa has to squeeze out the shit for the subscriber numbers to remain( appear) strong.

Maybe it’s about time they asked their CEO to step down, because they obviously have no idea what they’re doing. Meanwhile how long before an announcement that the show can be merged with Leo’s sycophant show on Sundays, er I mean This Week in Tech and All About Android to be merged with This Week In Google while iOS Today or whatever it is called now will be merged with CrackTake Weekly, er Macbreak Weekly because “Advertisers on advertise on my shows” Leo Laporte has been told he’s the cash cow!

This will shortly be followed by an announcement that all shows will be done on an offline basis and they will cut staff to almost zero and relocate to the Garage & Japanese Swamping Tub at Laporte Towers Petaluma.

    1. Mucky: because “Advertisers on advertise on my shows” Leo Laporte has been told he’s the cash cow!

      1) He really is the cash cow. As much as we can’t stand him, we mostly can’t stand him because of his behind the scenes character. Yes, he gets a little braggy about his wealth, and over the last few years, he’s stopped preparing for his shows, but he still knows how to moderate a panel better than most. He’s actually a pretty talented host. He just needs to put effort into being a contributor.

      2) There’s so much hypocrisy when he says that only his shows make money because he tells advertisers to use the TWiT offer code on all the shows. He hates it when individual shows get their own codes. Because then it looks like revenue from ALL shows are attributed to his shows.

But let’s be honest, he’s probably right. Super niche shows like HTG won’t make money because they don’t have a large enough audience. And they stopped investing in talent after Tom, Sarah, and Iyaz left for greener pastures. I have no doubt that Leo’s shows make the money — but that’s 100% by design. They’ve never really given the other shows a chance. I think AAA is probably the closest you’d get to a successful non-Leo show.

  10. Sad to see Home Theater Geeks go. It was the only show on the network that I looked forward to watching on a weekly basis, that had no BS, just straight talk about home theater and movie related tech. Scott must be devastated.

No surprise about Know How and Tech News Today. The writing is now on the wall for Father Robert, Jason and Megan. Once those Apple metrics start rolling out and advertisers see that nobody listens to the ad segments or TWiT shows in general they’ll be axed.

We’ve been saying this for months now, the future of TWiT is Leo hosting the core shows; MacBreak, Security Now, Windows Weekly, TWiG, The Tech Guy and TWiT out of a home studio, all guests via Skype.

He was living large for years, the Brick House Studios the apex. The downfall began when Lisa fed him with insecurities about Tom, Sarah, Iyaz, etc., people who could’ve replaced him and more importantly who spoke truth to power. This is what you get when you surround yourself with a bunch of yes men and women. No talent and a business that’s on the brink.

    1. That’s all true, but if the coming metrics show that nobody is listening to the ads on any of TWiT’s shows, or worse, they aren’t listening to the complete show, doesn’t that mean that Leo has been defrauding advertisers for years? Wouldn’t they be entitled to some refunds, at the very least?

I think both Leo and Lisa have basically agreed in private to do this.

Leo doesn’t particularly care about the technology much anymore, he’s cares more about looking forward to his retirement now.

Leo is 60 now, he’ll probably run it until he’s 65 to milk the last few years out of it. At that point he might make some half hearted attempt to sell TWiT, but I suspect no-one will be interested and it will close for good.

Saving the network (if its possable) could only be done sooner rather than later, and would need to be infused with a lot of cash. That neither Lisa or Leo want to do. They are keeping the dog alive long enough to shoot it.

When Leo inevitably realizes there will never be a “CNN of Tech” and decides to go back to hosting a radio show and occasionally streaming a Skype panel discussion from a room in his retirement cottage, he could probably just auction off all the current streaming gear to his viewers/listeners. I can’t imagine Lisa’s building any business with lasting value beyond Leo’s retirement, or that anybody would want an internet -based streaming video studio in Petaluma, or that Leo’s developing any talent to simply take over for him with the business in place as is.

TWiT has always been about long-form, nuanced (prior to Leo cheating on his wife) discussions. A daily tech news show never really jived. It’s why product review shows never took off either, though if you check YouTube that’s where the tech people (MKBHD, iJustine) are making their money.

I was going to list lots of other tech Youtube channels, like LinusTech, TheVerge, but their views are all in the 500,000s to millions, so it didn’t really seem fair.

I guess you can understand why a lot of companies are not choosing to advertise on Twit anymore.

    1. YouTube views (especially after being up only 1 day) are meaningless and usually understated. The views on This Week in Tech have been consistent for a decade.

Tech News Weekly is a nightmare. It looks like Megan is only hosting once every two weeks and they are alternating hosts. They rotate people into Know How and Screen Savers as well. It seems like she averages about 7 hours work a week. The same people on every show rotating in and out is exactly what twit is not supposed to be.

  17. Lisa got rid of every decent looking woman at Twit. Lisa Bettany, Dr. Kiki, that stupid whore Snubbs, Heather Mac, Sarah Lane, Chad Johnson, Veronica Belmont, Becky Worley, Jolie O’Dell and replaced them with Two Ton Tonya and Christina Warren the racist.

She just wants to be the only halfway bangable slut in the garbage heap.
