Failed TWiT Show “The New Screen Savers” Still Has No Audience

“Watch my hands. When my hands go down, everybody applaud… Whoa yeah! Yeah yeah yeah! Woo woo, woooooo!”
Leo Laporte
He had a talking digital assistant read the cold open? As a mom, I’m shocked.

It’s hard to believe Leo Laporte’s failed, ego-inflating side project The New Screen Savers is still having new episodes produced. I guess that’s what happens when you have an admitted failure of a CEO like Lisa Laporte.

In a move that should surprise no one, #Soup had to resort to having Anthony — the only one with any talent left at TWiT — “Simon says” the Amazon Echo into repeating the cold open for the show.

Oh god. That show is still on? Did you know I have kids?

We’ve previously written about how they had to have their rent-a-cop read the cold open. Previously, he had to force a The Tech Guy viewer to do it.

Just admit TNSS isn’t working, Leo. It didn’t restore TWiT to glory. TNSS is never going to happen.

Lisa Laporte’s fantastical dream of having the “TV show” syndicated on airlines and college campuses is similarly never going to happen.

Lisa Laporte is really bad at her job. I have kids, by the way.

The show is terrible. It’s boring. It’s devoid of content. And the saddest thing is… it’s depressing. It’s just sad to watch you do it to yourself weekly.

I will give Anthony kudos for the production of Megan Morrone’s acting debut in the short below. It gave us lots of great pictures of Megan.

Thanks to an anon from #drama for the video.

  1. Damn.

Leo is screaming like a jackass because he knows now TNSS is a failed project that was a 100% forced production by him and CeHo alone.

Also, JCD was fucking right, the show would have been something if Leo would have made it something. The format was still a very workable format. It is a case of poor follow throught by Soupy Laporke and his cunt wife Yoko CeHo.

    1. Yeah, maybe if it didn’t reek of low budget production values it might have taken off. But anyone who has seen their preshow knows very little work goes into this show.

Also the random science bits are fucking random and garbage. Every week it’s some fucker from NASA talking about star systems or some university professor talking about growing vegetables with no light. Lame AF.

    2. The problem boils down to the cheap production and the emphasis on editing. The show has no life. The old original Screen Savers was a live Daily show that had professionals doing it. It had a lot of life. This is amateur hour, lifeless, hopeless, very unprofessional and cheap looking. Leo has never produced real TV. He thinks that having a bunch of stationary cameras, no floor manager, no director whatsoever, somehow can make a TV show. It cannot. It should have been syndicated by now but people who buy these shows see a cheap production that looks like it came out of some college or high school.

Instead of hiring some pros who do TV for a living he keeps the money to blow it on doo-dads, cameras, cars and trips here and there to show Lisa that he’s a big shot.

The reward is huge for a syndicated show that catches on. Leo wastes money on everything else and listens to his bookkeeper wife who has somehow become an expert with no experience. Dvorak was right and Leo dropped the ball by pretending he knew what he was doing. I think the experiment is doomed.

Also, insofar as syndicated TV is concerned, the market for weekly shows is crap. The big money is in daily shows that take off. Instead, and on a daily basis, Leo wastes time on one loser show after another with Twit (This week in Toadyism) ending the week. And Twit’s viewing has fallen over a cliff as Leo seems to want to talk politics.

With all that in mind, what sort of TV person wants to haul themselves up to Petaluma to do a daily show? Nobody.

Leo should have moved his operation down to Marin or even SF when he made his last move. Instead, he moves further away. WTF?

He has to know, deep down, that he’s fucked. He had the formula for a decent syndicated daily tech show, but could not pull it off. He’s a cheap corn-pone loser when it comes down to it.

With The New Screen Savers it looks like it was just another show to prove that TechTV was wrong all along. He actually proves they were right. This stuff does not fly. At least it does not fly with him as the phony ever-laughing host.

    3. I listen via podcast so I don’t see the video side of it so I can’t comment on that but I do like some of the guest and shows for TNSS. I enjoy the brief news at the beginning and if the guest are interesting to me I listen, if not I don’t tune in. The first shows were great because you could catch up on all the “old” actors from the original show.

Megan, if you read this, you’re the only reason I still follow TWiT.

Someone needs to have a come to Jesus moment with Leo and put this show out to pasture. That was beyond cringeworthy.

You’re embarrassing yourself, Leo. Do the right thing; take this show out back and put a bullet in it.

  7. What happened to Erik Lanigan’s Youtube account??? Closed for violating terms of service, even though he’s been DEAD FOR OVER 2 YEARS?

    https://www.youtube.com/user/eriklanigan/

Could it have been the “Why I’m No Longer at TWiT” video with 250,000+ views? Lisa Laporte and Leo Laporte wouldn’t issue false DMCA claims against a dead guy’s account, would they? Nobody could be that heartless, especially when they had a hand in killing them…

Oh, you know god damn well they did. I’m surprised Leo hasn’t figured out a way to get this site taken down, or any that reference his scandalous behavior.

I had no idea that Erik passed away…I wonder what the cause of death was.

What a bunch of spineless cry babies. I took them over 3 years to get a dead man’s account pulled because they are afraid of the truth. They must be getting desperate over at Twit. Someone should post his video on this site if anyone saved it as a tribute to Eric. RIP

  8. When the radio station folds Leo loses $400K and another $100K the podcast makes.

Twit is not in the top 10 in technology podcast on iTunes. Two years ago it was practically the entire top 10. Now junk, and shows like Recode and Verge are ahead of twit. Those are side projects?

The end is near so have a beer.

That, and the shit content doesn’t help either.

They always have Art is Anal Agency to fall back on. Oh wait, Anal’s sole remaining client is TWiT LLC.

The Dick pic was the manifestation of Lisa’s meddling in the on-air side of the company. When she was hired she was brought in to clean up the books, not make talent decisions. Say what you want about Leo now, but if you look at TWiT’s roster prior to the brick house move it could stack up with any organization out there. TWiT was hands down the place to go for the latest and best technology coverage.

Since Lisa became involved romantically with Leo he has walled himself in, inviting on the same handful of guests, indulging in himself and stifling the free flow of ideas that made TWiT what it was. I have a hard time believing that Leo is making these decisions on his own. I think he and his wife stew over things (Tom Merritt, Sarah Lane, JCD) and she pushes him over the edge.

If that radio show goes, TWiT will radically change. Leo will probably end up doing the core shows out of a home studio, with panelists Skyping in (which is no different from now).

If you think it’s bad now, just wait until his son starts working there (you know it’s coming).

  9. Slightly off-topic: tonight’s TWIT (7 May) features the ugliest, most repulsing looking panel ever: Brianna Wu, Amy Webb (someone married that slob) and some guy. Oh, how the mighty have fallen!

Brianna is the most sane and coherent on the panel. That’s saying something.

  10. TotalDrama.net Says:

It’s hard to believe Leo Laporte’s failed, ego-inflating side project The New Screen Savers is still having new episodes produced.

Here’s the thing, IMO, they don’t produce these shows for the audience, they produce them for advertisers who still pay them handsomely for their viewership numbers which are collected “in house”.

Of course, if these advertisers had any sense, they would use YouTube numbers where shows like TNSS gets on average 5,000 viewers a month, meanwhile iJustine gets at her lowest 100,000 a week.

The numbers TWIT gets on trusted and widely used platforms such as YouTube does not justify the amounts of money they’re getting to pay a full time staff of employees at the new Storefront Studio.

Which can only mean that they’re committing massive fraud with their “in house” data IMO and hypothetically speaking, if you can convince advertisers that 5,000 viewers a week = 5 million, you are made.

I would split advertisers into two categories

    A. Advertisers who want brand awareness

Advertisers who want brand awareness such as Amazon/Audible, Braintree, Blue Apron, are already well off and don’t do research.

TWIT supplies them with favorable numbers and they cut a check because they simply want their brand seen on as many podcasts and online shows as possible.

    B. Advertisers who want customers/sales

OTOH Advertisers who want customers such as MeUndies, Jack Irwin, Personal Capitol, etc will carefully monitor referals, engagements, etc and when TWIT’s “in house” numbers don’t jive with sales they’re getting, they quickly pull out because they want customers.

Hypothetically speaking, if you’re spending $500,000 for 5 million viewers (based on “in house” numbers) but only making 5 sales a week in underwear, you’re losing massively and it makes zero sense to continue advertising.

With that said, as long as they can continue getting revenue from Category A advertisers while continuously convincing new Category B customers to come on board, they’re made for the next decade or so and will continue churning out crappy content such as TNSS.

If they could get away with it, they would broadcast a black screen with a test tone playing in the background.

    1. Podcasting is still a nascent medium. I would venture to guess that many podcasters “cook the books” in terms of downloads, streams, views, etc.

Like you said, the big companies are just cutting a check and not thinking twice about it, and the little guy is so desperate to get his product out there that he’ll accept any offer.

I still think the current iteration of TWiT, strip mall studio and all, is in large part due to the radio show. At least Leo gives off that impression.

If we knew more specifics about the radio show, then we’d know whether or not that going away would be a deathblow for the company.

At the end of the day, Leo can always podcast out of a spare room in his Petaluma mansion. He’ll be around for a long, long time.

  12. Security Now seems to be the only show worth watching on Twit Network. With no exceptions all the other shows regurgitate the exact same news, show after show until Twit comes around and then we get the Democrat narrative on how things work with almost no Tech news and a lot of giggling. If a new phone comes out they talk about that and Leo goes and buys one and takes a tax write-off. That is the formula for the entire network. The Daily Tech News is a huge waste of time, it is as if they know that nobody is watching. And like the NSS it is cheesy.

Here’s a prediction. To ‘fix” things they will announce that the whole network is going 4K. That will make it all better.

  13. Oh, i went back to watch/ listen to the last two shows. BOTH shows had beginning-to-end microphone thumping. Boom boom boom. Geez, terrible. Incredibly amateurish. Thump thump thump. Hire someone who knows how to mic people up!!

Also, i didn’t realize that politics has crept into this show too. We already have enough opinions. But all the mic thumping and booming makes the shows impossible to watch or listen to.
