Leo Laporte Discusses Dumping More TWiT Shows

Chins for days.
Chins for days.

Leo Laporte lives a pretty tough life. In between $22,000 cruises complaining about rancid food and getting butlers to serve CeHO for the next cruise, he has to occasionally show up to the Shoebox Studios to interrupt his guests/cohosts and say incorrect things on camera.

It takes a lot out of the poor guy, so he’s looking to drop more shows, reducing his “work” week to 4 days. He tried to rope Megan into hosting more shows, as you can see in the video above, and then ponders dropping Windows Weekly.

Look out Paul Thurrott and Mary Jo Foley! Your shared hairdresser has to get paid somehow.

  1. Actually, he doesn’t work 5 days. He barely puts in any “full days” and he clearly does no preparation. Most of his time in the office is covering for his girlfriend who he made CEO. She can’t make decisions on her own. Her salary is a waste of 2 or 3 hundred grand. She calls them “meetings ” but it’s really him telling her what to do.

He has been off Thurs-Fri instead of Saturday and Sunday. He puts in half the hours i do, i ain’t giving him no break.

        1. Oh wow. Off on Thurs and Friday when everybody else is working. So much to do on those days! Everybody else is busy at work while you sit at home on your ass. Nobody ever has social activities like concerts, parties, events etc on the weekends right? Everybody should just take off Thurs and Friday instead of the weekends!!!!

Yeah, you can very easily tell he’s kidding with the Windows Weekly comment. Just another feeble attempt by these nimrods to make something out of nothing. Moving on.

  2. You should ask this question: does Leo Laporte, aka “Dave Allen”, aka “Dan Hayes”, have an A+ certification? Does he have any other computer technical certification at all?

If the answer is ‘no’, he shouldn’t be giving tech advice.

What is this Dave Allen/Dan Hayes thing?

  3. Wow. I guess it’s really happening just as predicted. It’s just a matter of when it finally breaks down to nothing…at which point TD’s job will be done…which is something I’ll miss.

It won’t be long before they drop video on most shows either. My prediction. Soup should just close the doors and back out on that 10 year lease they signed for the shoe box studio and just retire .

      1. No, no, that will never happen. In Leo’s mind he’s created this wonderful network of unique content, why it even has its own CEO, so it’s definitely legit. And one day, real soon now, the GOOG or FB will walk into the studios and buy him out for a couple of $B. The unintended humor is watching Leo get old and fat while many of his former employees who left the reservation did well financially. They accomplished this in a short time while Laporte waits ( a decade now) for the buyout that will never come.

  4. He would never give up Security Now because it takes zero effort on his behalf. Literally paid for nothing. Dude is going to eat, why not get paid to do it at least one day a week? Truth is that other hosts are better because they both have knowledge and input on Steve’s topics. Although FMCP is still no better in my book. Just for different reasons. Bring back the Merritt! Or even Gum! As someone pointed out before, he was a “net better” host.

…and let’s not forget how Leo loves to troll the fuck out of Gibson to get his psychopathic rocks off: LEO LAPORTE DISRESPECTS STEVE GIBSON

      1. No kidding! What was Steve talking about when Leo told him to go back to DOS and unplug from the internet? Saying he didn’t want his ISP watching his data or something? Then there was the time they were arguing about Win10 I think and Steve retorted something along the lines of “do you really want to argue this with me?” The last Steve dis that I remember is Leo commenting how Steve has a weird breathing pattern which makes it hard for poor fatso to interrupt and get his lame ass comments in and ruin Steve’s train of thought.

I understand Steve not wanting to handle the editing and distribution but I’m sure he could find someone to give him a bigger cut and handle that for him (if Steve wants a cut period – probably refuses pay which makes Fatso’s comments even more plausible about never giving up Security Now). I imagine 99% of the audience would follow Steve to wherever. We are not there for Leo’s comments.

  5. Well, since Yoko ran everyone off who could have started offloading hosting duties, here is what he can do.

Merge iOS today and MacBreak Weekly.

Windows Weekly – let Padre host since it sounds like Leo is done with it anyways.

Security Now – really, Gibson doesn’t need anyone. He could solo that show. Notice the butthurt coming through when Leo notes people preferring the padre.

Also – It sounds like he’s depressed about the situation and is already contemplating spinning the thing down in the next 2 years.

  6. Dumping Windows Weekly would be retarded. It and SN are the only things worth listening to if you have a job in IT like I do. That said, I can see Andrew at QFQ picking it up and doing 1000% better job than Leo. I actually hope that happens.

Fuck man, have you listened to ‘What the Tech’? Like soup, that blue shirt wearing – paywall pushing hack Thurott recycles his week of bullshit from WW on WtT. Andrew Z could pick it up, but I don’t think the total views would increase much over what he has now.

  7. The way I see it is that Paul and Mary Jo are ramping up their websites going to semi subscription models and I think they mentioned they will be doing their very own podcast soon… Of course LL knows this and is just priming his audience, sort of foretelling what’s to come, LL wants to dump the WW show, before Paul dumps him, nobody fires el chief twit don’t you know, his ego can’t take it lol. On another note, LL looks tired and he doesn’t even prepare for the shows he does, regurgitate other people’s work, wash, rinse, repeat. His shows are boring! Soon he will have no audience and he is struggling to get his regular show companions to even show up. He just came back from a 22 day cruise vacation you would think he be happy and energized, but nope, maybe the honeymoon is over and is realizing he was sold a bill of goods, by the CEO, instead of growing to bigger better studio, the place looks like a dump, and they’re still having all sorts of technical issues, looks like the staff doesn’t even care anymore. Just one man’s opinion.

  8. Paul Thurrott already has a new podcast with Brad called First Ring Daily, and the thing about that show is that both Paul and Brad have a personal stake in that show in that it comes from their own site. Basically thurrott.com is Paul’s site but the real “CEO” of that company is Brad Sams. Thurrott.com is just using Paul for the name and recognition he has accrued over time, whether you like him or not the dude is known. So that podcast ain’t going nowhere.

For a while I thought Paul would close ties with Andrew Zarian and just keep doing WW and his own show, but in these past few months of watching every What The Tech podcast, a few things have been made clear to me: 1) Paul and Andrew are maybe not friends but definitely more than just acquaintances, 2) Andrew and Paul do spend time together off screen whenever one of them is visiting the other’s city, and 3) Andrew **is** the producer on First Ring Daily. That makes it inconvenient for Thurrott to ditch WTT, even if he wanted to which I’m sure he doesn’t.

That leaves WW as the third string podcast. This show used to be only Paul’s, then MJF came along and for a while it was sort of a good show, but now it’s not that it’s bad, it’s just that it is basically only Paul and MJF, Leo contributes nothing on that show. Megan did an ok job hosting that show earlier this month, but the real gem is Padre as a host because he actually knows stuff about Windows. Leo just plays the “oh look at my [device_name] it’s getting updated” or “oh look my [device_name] did not get the update”, sort of deal, it’s tiring. I’m sure both Paul and MJF notice this and basically keep doing the show just for the paycheck, which I’m sure both of them could do without, they generate enough traffic on their sites by themselves. Also, even without WW, at least in MJF’s case, their sites often break news on Microsoft so their name would still make it into whatever Windows/Microsoft related show TWiT does.

What I think will happen is that in the coming 12-18 months TWiT will stop producing WW. I think the show makes money, but TWiT has no interest in doing it, Leo knows nothing about the show and either Paul or MJF will quit the show within that time frame. Daniel Rubino from WindowsCentral might want to come aboard but the dude has zero personality on screen and is not relatable, and their other common guest host, Dr. Pizza, literally looks like he’s eating a pizza every time he’s on the show, not to mention how he’s always typing and makes weird sounds.

Is this the same for other shows? As you can probably tell, I only watch WW.

How do you figure that one out? Andrew talks a lot of shit from time to time and Paul can be a bit passive aggressive but I don’t think they dislike each other…

  9. Y’know what Leo, put Paul Thurott & MJF in charge of every one of your shows and maybe I will listen again. They are the only ones with any shred of credibility on your sinking ship of a ‘netcast’ network.

    1. The people who do the ham radio show are credible, just boring as heck. (I have an amateur radio license too) The people who do the legal show are very knowledgeable but unless you are a lawyer they too will put you to sleep. Note that those two shows have zero Petaluma content.

  10. Omfg, she looks like Spock! WW is the last entertaining show on the network. Paul is a great curmudgeon, which is why I miss Dvorak. She is a fucking tard if she drops it, there are so many commericals it must make some money.

But you wait, he doesn’t want to do it because Paul put up a page all and Leos feelings got hurt that he didn’t blindly follow the Masters 10 step model.

  11. Interesting, but not surprising. WW could run without Leo easily.

Security Now (Yawn) could be done without Leo. I can’t be critical of Gibson because I have never watched an entire show.

Also I have no “reasonable expectation” that I will see any quality content from Twit. 3 chimpanzees and a priest could replace everybody.
The only thing I have gained from Twit are recipes in jars, Tesla trivia and river cruises.
And yet I still watch with a hope I will see or hear just one thing I have not read a dozen times somewhere else. Leo’s own tech has outrun him.
    Twit now rehashes tech history.

    1. As soon as the profits aren’t worth schlepping his fat ass down to the studio that will happen. Notice how he chuckles when he says they can’t make the shows any shorter, because the whole operation is based on shoving as many ads as they can down our throats – for any product.

  13. There’s literally nobody there who could pick up the slack if Leo didn’t want to do certain shows anymore. He had Tom, Iyaz and Sarah but they’ve long gone. Then there was poor Erik, who was meant to take over the radio gig. I think Tom could of done The Tech Guy as well.

If he starts taking more time off, he’ll get the clown in the Priest costume to do shows, I guarantee it.

  14. It’s been very interesting seeing this all wind down. If someone would have suggested five years ago that I would have unsubscribed from all TWIT shows in 2016 I would have laughed at him.

Fallout from an unhappy marriage? Not for me to judge and quite frankly some of the comments on this new relationship are unkind.

But the comments about the shows: lack of content, decline in quality , etc. I have to agree with. Ironically WW was the last regular weekly listen – but the time has come to consider alternatives. I agree Leo adds absolutely nothing to the podcast . One Thurston Howell impression too many I’m afraid.

Bottom line – it’s not worth 60 minutes out of the week – or even an accelerated 45.

    1. I actually enjoyed TWIT the most in the cottage dayz, podcasting was new fairly new, I enjoyed tech, and they were a very small business that seemed to grow exponentially in profit and talent. Those days are gone forever, but still connected to TWIT from this site.

Remember that interview on “All Things D” with Steve Jobs when he returned to Apple and they told him, ” Apple is like a ship with the hole in the bottom, leaking water and my job is point it in the right direction”. TWIT is like this but the CeHo AKA Yoko has no idea on what direction to go.

        1. A better analogy is that TWIT was that ordinary guy who got addicted to coke and whores, eventually got two to the head by someone he mouthed off to, and now lies in a hospital bed, brain dead, on life support, organs failing, with a rent-a-priest reading him his last rites. Then he flat-lines and a group of interns run in trying to shock him back to life. His only connection to the world (his girlfriend/whore) walks into the room and grabs his valuables as he’s being zipped up for the morgue.

          RIP Laporke you fucking idiot.
