Watch Leo Laporte Struggle Using Linux

Time capsule of the last time Leo learned something new about technology.

Leo Laporte, Theeeeeeeeeeeeeee Tech Guy, had some technical difficulties with his System76 laptop during Triangulation.

After the show, he sought help from the shutins who frequent his chatroom and discuss Game of Thrones instead of the current guest.

Leo Laporte literally doesn’t even know what distribution he’s using, as you can see in the clip above. He desperately tries to follow Keith512’s instructions before giving up and saying he’ll just use a Mac from now on.

<@Keith512> what nvidia driver is it
<@Keith512> 375,381 or 384
<@Keith512> inxi -F will tell you
<@Keith512> maybe upgrade 375.66 to 381.22
<@Keith512> let me just check

Listen as Leo does various voice impersonations to try to deflect from the obvious awkwardness. It’s a long clip, but it’s painfully delicious.

Maybe he should follow his own advice for fellow grandpas and long-haul truckers:

JUST BUY A CHROMEBOOK.

  1. And this moron is giving people tech advice still? Nobody should be expected to know everything, but he leans way too heavily on the chatroom these days. It’s a total crutch for him. I’d love to see just one show where the chatroom just stayed completely silent and listen to him try fumbling through three hours of his show.

  3. Well since not everything always works with Linux you can hardly blame Leo for this. Not everyone’s a reverse engineer / kernel developer / ALSA guru to be able to fix Linux audio issues.

  5. Just imagine working for this guy… good lord. As he declines, the quality people less & less… cause Leo gotta be better. Great example of how not to be.

Elgan or his wife may well be assassins. They have all the earmarks and looks of creepy spooks.

    2. Virginia Votes:
This Week in Google had a Dr Jeff Jarvis on as a regular. He was accused here and many places of being a Google patsy.

I don’t think is is controversial to say that Jarvis is one of the biggest Google shills in media.

He “contributes” with the things in the discussions:
      * Shilling for Google
      * Bashing European consumer protection laws.
      * Basing Trump
      (And general retarded logic/trolling)

He used to be able to contribute with kissing Gina Trapanis’ feet until she got fired. He came across as an old man hoping to get sex by showering a female with cringeworthy compliments en masse. If you even go after the lesbians you have to be desperate.

Maybe he was hoping to score with Hillary Clinton too…

      1. Why do you say Gina Trapani got fired? As I recall, she felt she had to quit, and was even doing recurring host appearances for a while. I sooner believe the rumor that GT started boycotting TWiT after one too many Leo debacles.

    3. I tweeted to Lisa that I was done with TWiT BECAUSE of Jarvis’s politics mixing on air in the TWiG podcast. I’m 50 years old. I buy things. Her reply to me? Blocked on Twitter. That says it all.

Just like she blocked moving the bricks.

  7. The last couple of posts on Total Drama have been absolute SHIT!

Would it be asking too much for some well researched columns? How hard would it be to get a troll into the TWiT IRC Chatroom to link to the dick pic?

God alfuckingmighty! Let’s get something going!

  8. PIJJ on Google:
    http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-40455444
Depending on your point of view, this was either a long overdue move to trim the sails of an over powerful monopoly – or it was Europe throwing a hissy fit because it can’t produce a company as innovative as Google.

The second view is expressed forcefully on our programme by the media academic Prof Jeff Jarvis, long an admirer of Google. He says there is little evidence of harm to consumers from Google’s behaviour and sees this week’s fine as sour grapes:
“I think Europe has constantly been in the position of feeling jealous that it doesn’t have a Google,” he tells us. “But you’re not going to get there by regulating and passing protectionist legislation.”

But in the view of Prof Jarvis that is because they have watched impotently as the innovative web giant steals their advertising business – so they have decided that their enemy’s enemy is their friend.

  9. The BBC has identified JJ as an “academic”, not a public intellectual. It may be that his lionisation as a PI is limited to the USA.

Can you be considered an academic if you only have a bachelor’s degree? Honestly, this is one of the things that I hate most about him. I’m not saying a lack of education necessarily means a lack of intelligence, but being an academic means something very specific.

Also, how the heck did he get a job as a college professor with just a bachelor’s degree? I have a master’s degree and am ABD in my PhD program and no one will hire me until I finish my dissertation and have my doctorate in hand. And even more — because many universities hire adjunct instructors (though they always a minimum of a master’s) — how did he get tenure?

I seriously don’t understand CUNY. I have trouble trusting their reputation knowing that they hired someone with only a bachelor’s degree to teach in a journalism program. It’s really weird. Apparently he’s “acting director of a new MA in social journalism.” So a guy with a bachelor’s degree is in charge of giving people master’s degrees? How does that make sense? I just looked up other professors in the program and all of them have extensive industry experience and a minimum of a master’s degree in a related field. I didn’t look at all of the faculty, so I don’t know if there are more Jarvises, but I don’t understand what made him so special that they just had to have him even though he isn’t qualified to work in academia by traditional standards.

  10. For those Linux detractors, yeah there were issues with configuring audio for a long time but things have gotten much more stable and reliable — essentially you’re the types who also criticize Windows because FAT is a crappy file system. Update your criticisms if you want to be relevant.
That aside, it’s not so much that Leo is finding Linux hard to maintain, the problem is Leo lost his edge working with any OS. He at one time had a lot of hands-on, first hand experience but those days are gone. His Linux, Mac, Windows, iOS, Android knowledge is based on random bits of info he occasionally sees online but mostly his chat rooms and guest hosts are what props him up during each show.
An interesting parallel that’s a good reflection of how Leo has morphed away from being an actual techie is the change in the stable of TWIT ads. At one time it was primarily tech based products like Astaro, Eset, Ting, etc. Now he’s pushing mattresses, shaving products, and snack foods.

Yeah, I thought that was a pretty weird, out of date comment to make. I can’t think of a “major” distro with known problems with audio. Pretty pathetic for alleged tech enthusiasts.

      > At one time it was primarily tech based products like Astaro, Eset, Ting, etc. Now he’s pushing mattresses, shaving products, and snack foods.

Yeah, the rationale for that was alleged conflicts of interest with TWiT shows. And there’s nothing to brag about Ting sponsorship. Its really a shame he put a part-time bookkeeper in charge of sales, let alone “corporate” decisions.
