Why Everyone Ignores You in #twitlive

Do you ever wonder why nobody responds to you in #twitlive? Do you wonder why the only people talking are the same 5-7 people every day? Do you, like possibly Leo Laporte, wonder why there are no <WebXXXX> chatters anymore?

The inmates have taken over the asylum and Leo Laporte is no longer in any sort of control over the situation.

In #twitlive, no one can hear you scream — or talk.

We’ve been thinking about writing an exposé for a while, but <@OzNed> finally gave us the written proof we needed to wrap everything up in a nice little bow below.

Let’s explore the myriad ways #twitlive is currently broken.

Join Delay

We’ll start with the join delay. When you join #twitlive, there is a two minute delay before you’re allowed to talk. This trick is visible, unlike the nasty invisible tricks we’ll detail later. They ostensibly do this to prevent drive-by trolls joining, spamming, and then quitting. This gives the ops time to determine if a chatter is worthy of hanging out with Uncle Leo.

<User8471> hey everybody!
== You must wait 120 seconds after joining to send to channel (+d): #twitlive

Even users with voice — like mister <+raygun01> in this video — are subject to this limitation, for no apparent reason.

CTCP Queries

<@legat> queries your IRC client for TIMEand recently for VERSION — when you join #twitlive. You may be wondering: “Who the fuck is legat and why is he querying my client?”

legat [legat@moderator.twit.tv] requested CTCP VERSION from User8471
legat [legat@moderator.twit.tv] requested CTCP TIME from User8471

@legat, in this case, is acting as a bot, though it sometimes talks as well, so it may be a person running a script. It queries your time and then matches up your geolocated — and often very inaccurate — timezone to your CTCP TIME reply. What does this mean? If your timezone doesn’t match, you are SHUNNED.

What is SHUNning, you may ask? It means no one can see you talking, with the possible exception of the mods/ircops. YOU ARE TALKING INTO A VOID.

This was added a few months back and Leo congratulated <@can0k> on this “genius” (his words) technological achievement. Trolls quickly saw through this obvious scheme and started changing their timezone to match what is in IP geolocation databases so it had no effect on the trolls, but it did affect the normal #twitlive sheep. If their IP’s purported location doesn’t match their real location, they get shunned.

<@can0k> hung his head in shame and left with <&Dan>, never to be seen again after the virtual mod mass-suicide of 2015 in the aftermath of #DickGate. Leo had to beg morons like <Keith512> to become mods after the great exodus.

Auto-Kicks Just for Talking

Shortly after certain trolls started repeating things in #twitlive over and over, the flood controls were lowered, limiting people to saying 2 things in a rolling period of six seconds. The 3rd line gets you kicked and no one sees it (except perhaps the mods). The trolls quickly learned this and simply adapted to send one line every two seconds, never getting kicked automatically.

The morons in control left this measure intact, which kicks only sheep every single day. Looking at the logs is hilarious and gives lots of material for @LeoLaporteSucks on Twitter.

Auto-Kicks for Repeating, Even Hours Apart

The best part of this is that the poorly-written flood controls also control duplicated lines. This was put into place because trolls would flood the same message over and over, so the bot would kick on the repeated message.

However, the bot can’t detect a duplicate if one simply adds punctuation at the end or changes one letter, so it doesn’t affect trolls at all, who immediately adapted to this intended limitation.

Again, who it does affect is normal #twitlive sheep just trying to talk. Especially hard-hit is Giz Fiz. Part of the show is a game show where the chat room answers “true” or “false” to a series of trivia questions.

If they say “true” or “false” two times in a row, instant kick/ban. Or, take the following situation where <WIGuy> thought two things were funny seven minutes apart. Big mistake, WIGuy!

Automatic Shunning

#reports
#reports
This brings us to present day and the gift that <@OzNed> provided. We have long known that everyone is automatically muted now unless you are one of the chosen few sheep allowed to chat. Everyone else is automatically shunned, which is why you see no one — especially WebXXXX — chatting.

The mods have a secret channel called #reports where the shuns and unshuns happen, and possibly where the shunned users’ text goes (since it does not appear to others in #twitlive). We are fairly certain they can read your shunned text, because if you act like a sheep and talk into the void long enough, they will unshun you — but this usually takes hours. Hours of talking into a voidwhere no one can hear you except for the mods in a secret gestapo channelbefore you are allowed to talk.

Conclusion

This post has been a long time in the making. We hope you appreciate the in-depth explanations for why you cannot talk in #twitlive.

What’s pretty funny is that <@ScooterX> literally controls who Leo is allowed to talk to on Leo Laporte’s national radio show — The Tech Guy — and who he gets answers from.

Leo is truly powerless in his own chat room.

  1. The chat room death is another nail. It’s self inflicted just as most of the nails were.

The interesting analogy is that Laporte always spoke about how DRM harms innocents and pirates figure out how to get around it. This is the exact same thing only from the pigs own hands.

  2. And why does the fat priest take the mods side? That poor sheep (twitter guy in this piece) just wants to tell Leo he loves him and Leo won’t let him. Anyone who thinks twit will be around (in any resemblance to its current state) in two years is high as a motherfucker.

Great story and thank you for this information.

    1. In Padres world anyone that has a different point of view or contradicts him and says so, is a troll. If you don’t blindly agree with everything, you are a troll. And as you know, all trolls must be removed.

Even if your answer is right, you were a troll because you corrected them. Banishment for all trolls!!

In the end, it just proves that 1) they are afraid 2) they can’t stand someone calling them out on bullshit, and 3) the irc mods are power tripping little ass kissers.

        » Quote comment

      1. It’s been that way for 4 years now. Anyone that doesn’t kiss Leo’s ass is branded a troll. Nothing new here. At least Dan went away to get some much needed psychotherapy.

  3. Excellent and comprehensive reporting. Since I don’t listen or view TWIT anymore, this is my only outlet for keeping up with the exploits of serial braggart Laporte.

  4. The mods were chosen for reasons other than good judgment. For no pay, only semi-delusional power egos would regularly perform these abusive duties. I and most of the others abandoned the twit chats long ago. Leo used to follow and use the chat posts, but now they’re a vestigial remnant of what used to be. It’s cyclical of course, because all of the nasty posts overwhelm the useful ones which cause good posters not to post which leaves only the nasty, unclever, off-topic, abusive, vulgar, and so on and on. What host wants to wade through all that to get an on-topic, informational post?

Besides, really, beyond us, who even knows about irc anymore?

    1. Simple, take dumb calls from dumb callers. It doesn’t take a genius to choose between an S6 or a Motorola. Or to tell people to accept a free god damn operating system upgrade.

Throw in a few “smart watches are useless” rants, a few stories about your recent luxury trip and/or stories about how Woz and Paul Simon are his friends and you got yourself a national radio show!

Seriously though, his increasing tendency to repeat himself over and over again is probably in part because he wants to pretend he can be relevant without the chat.

  5. I usually watch TWiT on Twitch.tv and I noticed a couple of weeks back that the chat room there had been put in “subscriber-only mode”. The problem being that TWiT isn’t a partner of Twitch.tv and so they don’t have any subscribers, effectively shutting down all chat room activity over there. At first I thought it was so that people would not ask questions during The Tech Guy’s Podcast expecting them to get answered but now thier motives are more clear.

  6. Really excellent work everyone.

Can anyone clarify what happened with the mods resigning last year? Obviously I was around for the DickPic stuff, and I saw Leo saying he was shutting down chat and that he thought that most chat users were basement-dwelling weirdos.

But I didn’t realise this all led to lots of mods resigning. What happened? Did anyone say anything publicly, or did people just suddenly disappear? I might’ve missed a TD post…

I’m sort of fascinated by this, because it’s the closest thing to actual mutiny that we’ve seen on Twit – mostly, we see disaffected former fans ending up here, but I’d love to know if something more public happened.

Once again, thanks for this article. I’m a huge fan of everything you do, so I take the silly with the serious and I’m grateful for all of it.

From what I understand, after the dickpick, Dan and another mod or two quit in disgust. after seeing what a phony #soup is.

      1. The ironic thing is that if it took the Dick Pic to open their eyes to Soup’s narcissistic buffoonery, they really weren’t paying attention. Great skill set for a mod.

Dan was no angel. The guy was on a serious power trip. I could care less if he was disgusted or aroused by Leo but for one of #soups primary ass kissers to jump ship in a huff is significant.

#twitlive’s opaque model of suppressing input does get worse. There’ve been a couple of times the automated systems (poor AI) has complained about the number of CAPital letters I’ve used in a row, WTF OMG is sufficient to draw a reprimand. It’s a *tech* show fgs.

And the kick is twice as hard when you have to wait 120 undisplayed seconds without notification to speak again.

“God is a comedian playing to an audience that is too afraid to laugh.” ― Voltaire.

Voltaire clearly never heard of ScooterX, but everyone in #twitlive has heard from him.

That self-mythologising prick deserves invective. Insufferable example of absolute power corrupting absolutely. Suppressing necessary feedback is never wise.

In the end, it’s all just total drama. If I were Leo, I’d be running this site too.

    Respect yourselves “Twit Sheeps”

  11. The fact that TWiT still uses IRC just goes to show what a dinosaur the network is. Leo and IRC are just a relic of the past. That’s why all he does is answer what cell phone should I buy questions. Leo was relevant during the Windows 98 days, but today he is just a sales pitchman for the old farts that are too stupid to even know how to be on the internet.

    1. Nonsense. IRC is a great protocol. Too bad that the people who run it for SHiT have effectively disabled it for, you know, actual chatting. Don’t blame IRC though. It’s still being improved, and ‘old’ doesn’t equal ‘bad’ at all. -1 to you, writer, sorry.

Then Leo said he was sick of the “trolls” in the chatroom. So here we are. This was excellent.

This is indeed a group of vain preening a-holes.

    1. I remember the open days, they could still be if Leo wasn’t so lazy, turn on moderated comments and let the poster curate the comments, better than no comments, then after several weeks turn off comments. But that model would require a ongoing effort and we all know Leo’s attention span is, at best, his erection period(10 minutes) maybe.

  15. Fascinating. I know when I go to someplace online that reports my location or to Speedtest where it picks a close server it always reports me in Memphis, TN, which I’m not. I wouldn’t even know how to fix that, if it’s even possible.

I know I’ve had answers for questions and was so frustrated that Leo was stumped, asking for help and ignoring the obvious answer I was telling him in chat… and more so confused as to why I was the only person in the chat trying to help him, while the others were talking about playing a game or something else totally unrelated.

If the chat was Leo’s brain, then it’s lost a lot of brain cells in doing this, and seems to me to have left the ones who don’t really care about helping him. I just don’t understand.

Yep it’s in the TD DVR, at 20:48.30 he responds to someone calling him a liar in chat: “I’m insulted that you think I’m lying to you” and says of course he’s a Lifelock member, “I wouldn’t do it if I weren’t a Lifelock member”.

Then at 20:49.30 he says he’s banning the guy for being a dick.

At 20:49.40 he says “Isn’t that sad that somebody would call me a liar to my face”, then after doing several things including playing minecraft for several minutes and talking to a few guests, he goes back to it.
20:57.20 or so, “I think I’ve been a member for 10 years”. And then at 20:57.40 it shows he’s only been a member since… 2012.
He’s still got Henry down as a minor, paying a fraction of the cost. If it wasn’t because of his ego he wouldn’t have exposed the fraud of claiming a discount for a minor.

So in this instance, it turns out he wasn’t lying about using a sponsor’s services. That’s why he made such a big deal out of it – cos on *this* occasion he wasn’t lying.

The fact that he protested so much and wouldn’t let it go shows that he’s aware of just how much he does lie – not just about sponsors, but about friends, current and former coworkers, shows, audiences and…. well, everything.

Remember, the dick pic video was “photoshopped” according to Leo…

All these guests had one thing in common, they got paid to travel to Pataluma. Maybe Kevin Rose did it free but the rest had some self respect and make sure to get paid.

I have a strong and distinct memory of him on camera listing off, for the fans, all the names he was going to bring back from JCD to Tom Merritt and how he would fly in Dickie D and others.

Who are the present hosts. Padre, Megan, Padre, Jason, Padre, Iain Thompson, Padre, Calacannis, Padre, Ron Richards, Padre, Megan. What do all these people have in common? They get paid by TWiT so L&L can pressure them to work free. (Calcanisis is rich asshole so he works free and we know Padre worships Leo and begs to work free) The whole network is about doing it on the cheap. Guess what happened to me when I POLITELY voiced this concern in TWiT IRC?????

    Enjoy the new studio Leo

See, if Leo would admit the truth then his fans would get it. If he could only say; Patrick is too expensive, fans would understand. The problem isn’t that Leo is a liar, the reason twit backfired is Leo’s fans are smart. This site and Juno’s videos point out truths. His fans remember the things he says.
Leo was successful when he was honest. He was always a bit of a dick but his lies are never-ending now and he is getting called out on it. That’s why they won’t do the this week in twit YouTube video with Leo and Lisa nomore. They don’t want to be held accountable. I think total drama makes jokes about it because if they didn’t people would cry it’s so sad to watch.

    2. The whole show was a stinker from the get go. It’s just painful to watch… and to think a while ago Leo was looking to lessen his work load. Now he spends his Saturday afternoons doing take after take for a TV show that’s not even on TV.

But it’s Kuntsmell’s pet project so she can pretend to be a producer, so it’s their #2 show apparently. There can’t be that many brain dead TechTV fans who want to watch smug turds like Patrick Norton or Roger Chang regularly.

  22. Great article and this explains a lot as to why #twitlive totally fails. All we can do is point the fingers to Leo in dumbing down the chatroom which has further led to the dumbing down of the show.

  23. I just thought I’d also mention how on Saturday’s Tech Turd, he spent most of it talking about scammers, advertising tracking and how bad it is, then he bans someone from his chat room for calling him out about one of his advertisers? Hypocrisy much?

  24. Imagine if you will a 14 year old boy. He has just discovered sex, he can buy all the toys he wants, he’s an exhibitionist. He can do and say anything he wants.

When he asked Marquart how to say “man purse” in German Marquart actually had to stop and think about it.

Maybe man purses are not that common world wide. And now LL has all 3 sizes. Poor kid.

  25. Just curious:

Has anyone ever signed on and been “nice” on IRC… and then provided bogus answers to questions?

Might be a lot of real fun to feed #Soup totally wrong info and even more fun to just fill up the IRC with so much noise good can’t be seen for all the bad….

  26. I just tested this shunning ‘just to see’ and it really is the case that my comments did not show up when using two different devices with unique IP addresses.
    What a crock of shit!
