Mike Elgum just can’t be a real person, can he?

Mike Elgum's fake smile may belie a more sinister intention. Or not.
Mike Elgum’s fake smile may belie a more sinister intention. Or not.

We will never tire here at #TotalDrama of sharing the ridiculous way that “Tech News Today” host Mike Elgum reads ads on his childish show. Does Squarespace really think that this is the way people should hear about their product?

What remains unclear is whether Elgum could possibly be a real person with real feelings. So what’s behind the empty, fake smile? At #TotalDrama, we like to pride ourselves on answering questions, not posing them…but we are really at a loss with this one.

    1. And remember he makes websites on Square space “just forfun” he can’t even lie competently they are blatantly whopper and reinforcing with the word “Super” doesn’t help. There has to be someone on standby with a fire extinguisher to put out the burning pants during the show!

  1. The worst day of my life was when my podcatcher inadvertently downloaded an episode of Twit this bot-like character hosted.

Thankfully, I stayed conscious long enough to stop the playback and delete the file. My thoughts are with those who weren’t so lucky and have now probably joined hostbot 1985 in a state of permanent vegetative state.

    1. I agree with Datguy. It’s much harder for the reader to make an independent judgement about the opinion or slant of the blogpost with a highly edited video. The video should be the objective evidence or proof of the point or opinion that the blogposter is making. Editied versions can easily manipulate the truth. Raw video can’t.

        1. Just trying to help out. Do it whatever way you want but the strongest posts on this site are the ones where the videos are straight and the writing around it criticizes it.

          1. This Elcumonchin guy is about as traveled as pa stray dog. Him, cum guzzling soup man and Lisajuzzum face are all a bunch of lovers with no culture or class just a bunch of West coast quirky carnies, as for Sarah, in her day she was cool now she is a sloppy drug and booze induced nigger and Arab lover because no normal white guy wants her rotted sloppy wet cunt.

    2. I do too. It’s annoying when they edit the things when just showing the clip with commentary would far better. It completely ruins as does loud music over the top of things that you can’t hear what they say. Simple is so much better but from HelloWorld’s reply it looks like we’ll just have to put up with it because he’s obviously not interested in constructive criticism.

  2. That fake grin is yet another indicator of how much of a ‘grifter’ Gum really is! It is the smile of con-man, a rip-off artist.

Laporte uses the same fake smiles when he is saying nice things to a ‘fan’. He is more trained at lying on camera though to push the advertising.

The way that certain members of TWiT abuse the advertising using blatant lies and gimmicks to try and get people to use their codes for products.

It puts the products under a bad light. It insults the intelligence of the viewer and yet they continue to do this.

Mike Elgan lies consistently and is a terrible liar. He goes on about all these websites he makes on Squarespace just for “fun” yet he doesn’t pull one up and show that ‘wonderful website’ he pulls up one of the samples or has the TD demonstrate features on the website. The continual use of the word “super” to emphasize the product or a product feature is embarrassing, he is like a one word wonder. He makes it feel like he is running a scam on the viewers.

That awful priest, he speaks in a monotone, you can tell he has sat in a closet repeating and repeating and repeating the advertising spiel and it merely repeating from memory the Ad Read for his show. It is not convincing.

If I hear Laporte make a comment about reading Whisky Tango Foxtrot one more time on Audible ad’s. It is not a long book that is being read to you it is fairly short, yet he has been reading this same book for over 2 months now. Is it an easy book title to remember. He never convinced me to use the TWiT code. Let’s face it, you can sign up and get the same deal from Audible and not give any advertising kickback to Laporte! Even worse when he goes to sign in to Lynda.com or other services and not only does he not know the password but it is not present in Lastpass on his system? A blatant indicator that he has not visited there for a long long long long time, though his ignorance of Tech is obvious when he relies so much on the ‘IRC’ to provide answers for the now ‘vetted’ to be very easy to answer questions!

I have been surprised that they don’t have an advert for “Inside Lisa” maybe the one for ‘flowers’ would be apt or better still BarkBox!

This video of the fakeness of Elgan just highlights the problem with advertising at TWiT, if you have fake hosts reading Advertising in the way he does then it is no wonder they are losing advertisers.

    1. I don’t think being “fake” is a problem with the advertisers, rather it is the very point of hawking stuff.

Being hilariously bad at it, though, that’s a different matter entirely.

His up and down voice cadence is annoying as hell!
The whole lot on them could make bank selling car’s.
      Open a dealership Leo.

  3. Love totaldrama, agree on it’s commentary, but also agree on the edited videos being less funny and more annoying. The point trying to be made is lost with the editand instead becomes more annoying than a Mikey ad could ever be.

  4. Wait, wait. So you’d actually want to just watch TNT on YouTube as posted by TWiT? Just checking to see what you really want. I’m not joking…it’s good to get “market research” and feedback like this.

    1. I don’t want to actually have to watch TNT (never do), but I do enjoy seeing the Elgum crap in snippets here. You provide the same function as LLS. He wades through all that text to find the juicy bits so I don’t have to. That’s a real service but possibly not creative enough to satisfy the video artist you enjoy being.

      1. I agree. I watched about 2 episodes of TNT, lamented what they’d done to it and haven’t gone back. Exaggerating the faults like this satirical editing highlights the mess ups and makes you realize just how shoddy the original is. Keep it up 🙂

  5. This is a link to the uncut ad read https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4qwBoEG1EU&list=UUnxvzhbwByrxS60PNmkphdA#t=775 Now it’s easier, easier, easier to see the original 🙂 There’s not that much difference to the edited version in the post.

Speaking of sponsors, here are some of Twit’s and why you shouldn’t use them.

Audible – the audio is filled with DRM, meaning you can’t use it on all the devices you want. Digital handcuffs. Stay away.

Harry’s is another cartridge-system shaving scam. If you want a good, cost-effective shave then throw away canned foam and cartridges. Buy a stick of shave soap, a brush and a double-edged safety razor from Edwin Jagger or Merkur.

Naturebox, Barkbox – these monthly subscription deals are the same con whatever the product: the first month is probably OK, then the rest is filler that’s worth far less than what you pay for it. Also… dogs? WTF has that got to do with tech? Unless it’s K9. But he doesn’t have to eat. Also I bet there’s crossover from one “box” to the other. Repackage dog treats as organic human food. Win!
